What colour suit should I wear for my wedding?

When you agreed to pick the suit colour for your wedding, you may not have realised exactly how many colours were available. Grey, navy and black and absolutely the most popular choices, but did you know that suits also come in cream, white, green, light blue, brown, burgundy and so many more?

When it comes to your wedding day, every detail matters so it’s important to put some thought into the colour of your suit to ensure you match the bride, the bridesmaids and the overall colour scheme. Each suit has its own unique aesthetic and could give a whole different vibe to your wedding day.

But don’t worry – we’re the suit experts and are here to hopefully help make your decision a little easier. Below, you can find all the suit colour inspiration you need. Whether you do go with the more popular and traditional grey or navy, or you choose something a little bolder, we’re certain you’ll feel confident in your final decision.

What colour suits are appropriate to wear for weddings?

Before you can consider what you like, you also need to consider what is ‘appropriate’. But when it comes to the colour, almost any suit colour is going to be appropriate. It’s more the style and fit you need to think most about, particularly if your wedding has a specific theme or is very formal (such as black tie).

So if you have a certain shade in mind, from black to white, green to blue, there are absolutely ways you can make this work for your wedding day. Read on to find out how to style each suit colour.

Wearing a black suit to a wedding

Black has been and remains a popular choice for weddings. It’s classy, traditional, timeless and smart, plus it’s a colour you can’t really go wrong with.

There are a number of ways you can style a black suit. Choose a slim-fit tailored suit and wear it with a white shirt and patterned waistcoat to break up the colour a little. Add some colour with a waistcoat that matches your overall theme, be it pink, red, purple, blue or something else.
For more formal weddings, you can choose a black tuxedo or a top hat and tails suit.

Can you wear a green suit to a wedding?

We love it when a groom says they want to wear a green suit. It’s a lovely colour that works for weddings all year round and is something a little bit different. Green is definitely a bolder choice, and therefore not for everybody, but a green suit can work perfectly for both casual and formal occasions.

There are a few varieties of green to choose from, including a beautiful soft sage like our Monaco suit that has a subtle fabric texture or the slightly bolder tweed Gawsworth with red piping. Each offers a different vibe that may be suited to different weddings (spring vs. autumn, for example).

If you’re still slightly afraid to stand out in green, there are a number of darker shades available that may help you to blend in a bit better ‒ think forest or racing green. Or to tone down the colour, do a bit of mixing and matching with a green suit jacket and a pair of cream chinos.

Wearing a white suit to a wedding

White is another colour you don’t see very often, but we love the sophisticated, glamorous look a white suit can offer. It’s a classic choice that’s perfect for a spring/summer wedding but also a destination wedding.

You can guarantee it’ll go with whatever colour the bridesmaids are wearing, be it pink, green, blue or something else entirely, so everyone will look uniform in the photos.

The only thing you must consider is the colour of the bride’s dress. An ivory or off-white dress can look dull or faded against a crisp white suit, and we’re sure the bride doesn’t want this to be the case in the wedding photos. For this reason, we’d suggest you only wear a white suit when the bride’s dress is pure white.

Can you wear a cream suit to a wedding?

Cream is a colour that often gets forgotten about but can work really well for a destination or casual wedding. It’s a neutral colour that goes with a wide range of accessories, so you have the freedom to choose a coloured tie or waistcoat and know that it’ll match your suit.

We’d suggest you wear a cream suit with a crisp white shirt and a classic tie in a pastel or muted colour for a traditional look. This may be better suited for more formal weddings, such as those taking place in a church.

For casual or destination weddings, you can afford to lose the tie and waistcoat, and wear a white shirt with the top button undone.

Is it ok to wear a navy suit to a wedding?

While traditional choices like black and grey suits remain popular, there’s one option that stands out which is a navy suit.

We love navy for both formal and casual weddings. For the latter, pair a dark blue jacket with a pair of chinos if you don’t want to wear a full suit. For a formal wedding, pair your navy suit with a patterned waistcoat and colourful tie.

Dark blue looks particularly lovely with deep reds and burnt oranges should you want to stick to a truly autumnal wedding theme.

Can you wear a grey suit to a wedding?

Grey is still one of the most popular suit colours, so it’s definitely one you can’t go wrong with. Plus there isn’t just one shade of grey out there – there’s tons to choose from, like our light grey Harrow Silver to a darker charcoal. Either can be dressed up or down to suit any type of wedding, be it a church, a barn or an outdoor wedding.

As a contrast to the grey, pair your suit with a coloured tie or bowtie, including navy, burgundy or pink. Use a waistcoat to add some extra colour or detail.

Matching your suit with sage green dresses

Green is rising up the wedding trends list at the moment, and is a colour we’re seeing a lot more of, particularly for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

Sage green in particular is a beautiful, muted colour that has become increasingly popular in wedding palettes for its soft, natural elegance. There are plenty of ways you can apply this colour to your spring or summer wedding.

What colour suit goes with sage green?

No matter how you’re using a sage green colour scheme, be it in the bridesmaids’ dresses or the decor, you can’t go wrong with a light grey or cream suit. These colours together can maintain the softness, and would work wonderfully for a spring or summer wedding. These earthy colours would suit an outdoor wedding too.

What colour suit goes with a sage green dress?

When picking colours that go together but don’t match perfectly, you need to think about the contrasting shades. A mid-green suit won’t necessarily match a mid-green sage dress. In fact, the two might not go well at all.
Instead, go for a much darker or much lighter green that offers a contrast. A forest green suit would go better with a sage bridesmaid’s dress than a sage suit, for example.

For inspiration, take a look at our Carnaby Olive three-piece check suit, a subtle green suit with a Prince of Wales check. If you’re attending a wedding as a guest, and your partner is wearing a sage green dress, this suit will match wonderfully without being too similar in colour.

A light grey suit goes wonderfully with a sage green tie, offering some contrast while also introducing some colour.
