How to Dress for a Winter Wedding

So you have a winter wedding coming up and you have no idea what to wear that will be comfortable, warm and stylish. It can feel like a tricky balancing act, but with the right clothing and accessories, you can stay perfectly warm, even when you’re stood outside.

At Groom, we’ve taken a look at the best fabrics for cold weather, inspiration for winter wedding attire for grooms, how to layer up without looking too bulky and the footwear and accessories that will keep you comfortable.

Choosing the Right Fabric for Cold Weather

When you’re attending (or hosting) a winter wedding, the first thing to consider is the type of fabric that could help you to stay warm. Some fabrics are better at this than others, including wool, tweed and velvet, all of which are slightly thicker than cotton or linen and are therefore better insulators.

But it’s not just their thickness that makes them suitable for the cold weather. Wool has good insulating properties, as well as the ability to regulate body temperature, so it will do a great job at keeping you warm throughout the day when needed, without causing you to overheat once you’re in a warm environment.

Tweed is known for its wonderful patterns and its unusual texture, and it offers a classic look that suits any country wedding. It originates from Scotland and was originally designed for the cold, wet weather. If we were to pick the perfect groom’s winter wedding outfit, we’d absolutely choose either a wool or tweed variety.

Velvet offers quite a different appearance to wool and tweed, but its thickness will do a good job at keeping you warm, as opposed to a cotton suit.

If the wedding you’re attending is taking place mostly indoors and in one location, you could choose a more lightweight material, knowing that it will keep you warm enough. However, if the wedding is likely to be held in a chilly church, followed by a walk or a drive to the reception venue, then a heavier fabric is going to be your best choice.

Layering Up: How to Stay Warm and Look Stylish

Layering is essential for winter weddings, but how can you do this without looking like the Michelin man?

Well, you don’t need to start thinking about thermal vests or anything of that sort. When it comes to your wedding suit for the cold weather, we’d recommend a three-piece suit, as the waistcoat creates an extra layer that traps heat. Start with your shirt, then add your waistcoat and then your suit jacket.

For additional warmth, choose a Peaky Blinders’-style tailored overcoat that’s made from wool or a similarly thick material. To really stand out, you could choose a cape instead of a coat. While they aren’t seen as often, they can add a touch of flair to your outfit, and are ideally suited for more formal occasions.

Footwear for Winter Weddings

For a winter wedding, you may have to do away with the classic Oxford brogues, as these just won’t provide the warmth and grip you need in the icy weather. Instead, considering footwear that is going to look the part while also offering good grip is essential.

This is why leather boots are a great option that tick all the boxes –  they’re practical and sturdy while offering warmth and protection, plus there are tons of styles available so you’re sure to find some with a more formal appearance. When making a decision, look for boots that have sleek lines and minimal detail to ensure they’re in keeping with your suit (oversized, clompy boots may look out of place).

You get bonus points if you can find some leather boots that have rubber soles or good tread. Both of these features will help to prevent slipping on icy surfaces.

Adding Seasonal Touches to Your Outfit

We love a winter wedding, because it allows you to have some extra fun with your accessories. Scarves, gloves and pocket squares can all add a seasonal touch and let you bring more of your personality into your outfit.

Scarves that are made from wool or cashmere can complement your suit, while doing a good job of keeping you warm, and leather gloves will keep your hands warm while also contributing to the overall finished outfit.

When it comes to colour palettes, winter weddings often call for darker shades or jewel tones, so you can’t go wrong with a deep red, a rich blue, an inky charcoal or even an earthy brown suit. Metallic accents will only emphasise such seasonal colours, so add some gold or silver in your accessories. Cufflinks, pocket watch chains, watches and tie clips are just some of the accessories you can wear with your suit.

Practical Tips: Navigating Cold Weather Weddings

Winter weddings can come with their own set of challenges, including staying warm during all those group photographs and facing the unexpected weather changes (it was snowing and now it’s sunny?).

You’re going to feel noticeably chilly any time you’re stood outside, so as we’ve already mentioned, be sure to have enough layers that you can put on or remove as needed. If you aren’t wearing a three-piece suit, you may wish to consider a very thin thermal that goes unnoticed beneath your shirt. For additional warmth, accessories like wool socks and thermal gloves can make a big difference without detracting from your formal attire.

You may also want to plan ahead for any unpredictable weather. In winter, you could have the most beautiful, crisp sunny day or freezing rain, and it’s impossible to know which you’ll get until around a week before. Our advice, therefore, is to be prepared in any way you can. Pack an umbrella in the car and consider some waterproof outerwear that will keep you dry if the rain or snow starts.

Winter weddings are the perfect opportunity to showcase a blend of style and practicality. Through picking the right fabric, like wool or velvet, strategic layering and weather-appropriate footwear, you can stay warm without sacrificing style.

Seasonal accessories such as scarves, gloves, and metallic accents add flair to your outfit, ensuring you’re well-dressed for the occasion. By planning ahead and considering the unpredictable winter weather, you’ll stay comfortable throughout the day, leaving you free to enjoy every moment of the celebration
